Fashion is one of those hobbies can just as easily warrant an eye roll as it can an envious stare. You’re either on the cutting edge of style or thatperson who got tricked into spending hundreds of dollars on see-through plastic jeans.

The world isn’t black and white, though; and that means there are ways to make style your mission without going bankrupt or securing a spot in the “what was I thinking?” hall of fame. If you want to look good (and ya probably do) and you have the means to spend a little extra cash on your wardrobe, consider bypassing your normal haunts for any one of these eight shops.

These fashion-forward boutiques are where you want to go when you’re tired of looking like only a million bucks and want to hit that ten million dollar mark. From designer silky ties to drool-worthy brogues, here are some of the best luxury stores around the world and the best items from each place.

Drake’s — London, Tokyo, New York

With only four brick and mortar stores situated in Japan, New York, and London, Drake’s is a menswear brand that’s worth seeking out. Founded in 1977, Drake’s dipped their toes into the fashion scene by producing scarves and shawls for boutiques before branching out to the ties, shirts, pocket squares, and shoes they’re known for now. To ensure their clothing fits like a glove, you can buy made-to-order shirts in which you can select the color, fabric, cuff, and collar.

Shinola Store — Detroit, NY, Washington DC, San Francisco etc.

A watch is what you make of it — whether it’s an accessory with a killer suit or the focal point of the entire outfit, the variety of your timepieces gives you have a massive amount of control over your look. When you want to make a statement, but don’t feel it’s necessary to shell out a year’s salary for a legacy piece, you go with Shinola. These guys are relatively new to the game, but made big waves within the industry by opening up their flagship store in Detroit. They’ve recently opened up a shop on the waterfront in Brooklyn that offers up customizable watches, jewelry, and bikes. We dig The Bedrock, the team's newest release, because of its classic killer style.

Alton Lane — New York, Washington DC, Boston, Dallas, Richmond, San Francisco, Atlanta, Nashville, Savannah, Charlottesville, Charlotte

When it comes down to it, you’re going to Alton Lane for the suits, but the fact that they have showrooms with leather couches, whiskey, and a personal stylist can be considered a major perk. Alton Lane’s state-of-the-art 3D body scanner takes over 300 measurements of your body, making the fit of your custom suit pretty close to perfect, while you flip through a book of fabrics to find the one you like the most. Even their Italian-made pocket squaresscream luxury — a testament to the level of quality you get from stopping by.

Bird New York, LA, Culver City

You can’t be into fashion without dipping your toes into hipster territory — that’s where Bird comes in. Located in the hipster motherland a.k.a. Brooklyn, Bird has an arsenal of top designer brands along the lines of Anaak, Melissa Joy Manning, and Woolrich; it’s the type of high-fashion that incorporates that too-cool-for-school vibe you see perpetually following around today’s hipsters. Bird excels with their basics, giving a whole new life to tees, board shorts, and denim. Pro-tip: Combine this Randall Miller cotton striped t-shirt with these Bermuda shorts and enjoy the summer for all it’s worth.

Assembly New York — LA, New York

When you want to go the high-art route, you stop at Assembly New York; the place even looks like a gallery. Whether you shop in the men’s department or the women’s, Assembly’s got you covered from bottom to top. Some of the standouts among the scores of designers are Oliver Peoples, Comme Des Garçons, and ZED. Just try not to feel like a total boss in a pair of $275 linen floral trousers.

BEAM— New York

At the end of a long shopping day, when you’re ready to kick off your (super expensive) shoes and relax, BEAM offers an array of high-end furniture, accessories, and lighting for your pad. BEAM’s minimalistic vibe gives their furniture a mid-century modern feel — bringing the beautiful simplicity of the Eames chair and applying it to every room. It goes without saying that you should consider BEAM while furnishing your home, but we suggest one of their kitchen accessories if you want to start small. This Brew Cafetiere has a brass finish that makes pouring your coffee almostas fun as drinking it.

Mohawk General Store — LA

While the name of this store may conjure up images of the type of off-the-highway spots that specialize in fireworks and snuff, this LA boutique is for the fashion-conscious person who even cares about the level of style coming out of their knives! Mohawk carries clothing for men and women, as well as candles, cologne, paperweights, and cocktail shakers. Mohawk General Store features brands like Baxter of California, Blue Blue Japan, Alex Mill, but our favorite item has to be this ridiculously good looking Patch Pocket Italian Suit.

Fred Segal — Japan, LA

The LA Times calls Fred Segal the “godfather of the LA fashion scene,” saying “nearly every designer and stylist in town has worked here at one time or another” — so you know it’s a big deal — and only in LA could you buy mesh socks for $36. So, what do you go for when you shop at Fred Segal? Depending on how much you want to stand out, the Sunday’s Best upcycled oxford or this cashmere eye mask — the latter of which will definitely garner the most stares. With one location in LA and three in Japan, there’s no question about the imprint Fred Segal has made.

When you’re lounging on the couch in your new outfit, make sure you pour yourself a drink that’s as classy as you look. You can’t go wrong with a Ciroc martini or even on the rocks — just try not to spill on that new shirt of yours.
