There's plenty of lawn bowls players in Australia and around the globe, so there's surely a world record out there for the sport.

That's what Shayne Barwick thought when he sought to break a record for playing lawn bowls for the longest continuous time, in bid to help raise funds for his adored Cloncurry Bowls Club in Queensland, which he manages.

Barwick's aim was 73 hours, which he thought was the number he needed to enter history, after checking the current record.

Turns out the "73" was in reference to someone's age. There was no world record for singles bowling after all.

"I could have done 25 hours and it would have been a record," Barwick told ABC News. "I went and opened my mouth, and now I've got to stick to it."

So stick to it he did, and from Friday morning he bowled for 73 hours, receiving a 10 minute break every four hours.

The longest game he has played previously was between eight to ten hours, according to the news outlet.

Barwick finally achieved the full 73 hours of play on Monday morning, where he was finally able to get a beer and relax after the mammoth effort. Hopefully it'll be a while until someone else touches the epic record.

"I'm feeling very well suntanned and relieved," he told ABC Brisbane. The club's Facebook page has details on how to donate.
